Black History Month Celebrated with Art

Oh what an epic success, Black History Month was celebrated with art and transformative stories! The month was celebrated with activities across the globe in celebration of the black community. Especially, I would like to take the opportunity to celebrate my fellow black women entrepreneurs of Black Canada Women in Action and their transformative stories. Additionally, I would like to celebrate my fellow talented black creatives for their contribution to transforming the world into a more beautiful and diverse place. As a writer and artist, I am extremely honored to be part of our community of women, and creatives here in Canada and in the Caribbean. I entered this year’s celebration filled with enthusiasm and inspiration. I celebrated Black History Month with art. Read more below.

What does Black History Month mean to us?

Black History Month (BHM) is celebrated in February as an annual observance, and over the years, it has become heightened with a variety of activities spanning networking events, and galas. Originating in the United Sates of America, it is also know as African-American History month. Across Canada, the black community is celebrated and honoured for their contributions. More importantly, there seems to be more appetite to embrace the values of diversity and inclusion. Notably, black history month affords us the opportunity to fully embrace our uniqueness, history and culture. As an advocate for women empowerment, I strive to encourage our black women and girls to live their passions and achieve their dreams.

Art celebrates Black History Month

In 2024, I celebrated Black History month with art and creativity. I endeavoured to create artwork that celebrates the black communities of the world especially women. Over the years, I have observed the struggles that we face, and how with strength and courage we embark on a transformative journey to improve our lives. Living a fulfilled life is not for the faith hearted, but those who are resilient, and seek a higher level of understanding and appreciation. In that regard, I chose to paint on glass as a way to bring attention to our vulnerabilities, and show how we can embrace transformation. Undoubtedly, I attempted to do the impossible, and tell a powerful story through bottle painting and art.

As a creative, I find that it is extremely important to celebrate the achievements and contributions of black creatives including writers. I can recall one of my favorite poets and storyteller, Maya Angelou, whose words you would find on this website. One of her most inspiring quotes was about striving for greatness.

Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.

Bottle Art and Writing for Black History Month

During Black History Month, I felt inspired to combine my bottle art with my creative writing talent to design a writing journal for writers and creatives. Gone of the days of boring notepads and writing books, instead, this year, let art be your inspiration. Self-transformation starts with journal writing and soul searching; you are the author of your life. Gain strength in your journey, and remember that your power lies in the authenticity of words and your voice. My art-inspired journals are available on my online store. Finally, there are a perfect gift that special person in your life, that budding writer, and that adventure seeker and storyteller.

Our art-inspired journals feature hand painted glass bottles. Why bottles you may ask? Firstly, glass represents transparency. Secondly, glass represents vulnerability. Thirdly, glass represents vision and the ability to seek out meaning. Finally, glass represents how you see yourself. Next, when we paint glass, we show the transformative power of the art to change our vision, and to beautify life in such a way that success can be achieved.
